The Griffith Trio

The Griffith Trio has been presenting concerts around Australia, Asia and the Pacific for over a decade. Formed in 1997 as Ensemble –in –Residence at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University, the trio is comprised of three of the Conservatorium’s teaching staff committed to the high level performance and teaching of chamber music.  Their performances, recordings and broadcasts are regularly heard on local and national radio and have been widely acclaimed for the vitality of their music-making. Their broad repertoire covers the Classical and Romantic masterpieces for trio in addition to a range of 20th century music including music commissioned from Australian composers such as Andrew Schultz, Gerard Brophy, Louise Denson and Vincent Plush. The trio has released five CDs recordings with a sixth (of Haydn trios) to be released in 2010.  The trio maintains a busy performance schedule again this year including concerts in Singapore and a residency at the Beijing Conservatory in April.

Violinist Michele Walsh graduated from the University of Adelaide in 1974. In the same year she was National winner of the ABC Instrumental and Vocal Competition and was Concert Master of the Australian Youth Orchestra in 1975/76. Grants from the Australia Council and the South Australian Arts Council enabled further study in London with the distinguished violinist Szymon Goldberg. Following this, Ms Walsh performed extensively throughout the UK, Austria and France before returning to Australia where she was appointed Associate Concert Master of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. In 1989 she was appointed Lecturer in Violin and Chair of the String Department at the Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University. In 1994, Ms Walsh was guest Concert Master of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra for much of their concert season including the acclaimed tour to China. In 1995, she appeared as guest Concert Master of the Australian Chamber Orchestra and the Adelaide Chamber Orchestra. Ms Walsh has appeared as soloist with the Adelaide, Melbourne, Queensland and Canberra Symphony Orchestras. She is a regular guest violinist with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. She is also currently Head of the Strings at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University.

Markus Stocker was born in 1945 in Basle, Switzerland. After High School he studied 'cello with August Wenzinger and chamber music with Brenton Langbein, at the Academy of Music. At the same time he took courses at the University in Musicology, History and Philosophy. After completing his Teacher's and Soloist's Diplomas he furthered his studies for two years in Paris with Andre Navarra, Paul Tortelier and Pierre Fournier and also spent one year as assistant to Fritz Magg at the Indiana University in Bloomington, USA. In 1972 he won the International 'Cello Competition in Paris in memory of Maurice Marechal, whose 'cello he now plays. He also obtained the Debussy Prize of the City of Paris and in 1973 won the Soloist's Prize of the Association of Swiss Musicians. He then entered the Winterthur Symphony Orchestra and became a member of the Winterthur String Quartet. In 1976 he was appointed Professor at the Conservatory of Zurich. His solo engagements brought him to most European countries, North America, South Africa, Israel, Russia and the Far East. He has performed chamber music with such eminent musicians as Martha Argerich, Rudolf Serkin, Gidon Kremer, Sandor Vegh and Wanda Wilkomirska. Among his recordings are solo Bach works and the Mendelssohn works. In early February, 1995, he gave the European Premiere of Oskar Morawetz' cello concerto, Memorial to Martin Luther King, with the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra.

Stephen Emmerson studied music at Queensland University where he graduated in 1980 with first class honours and a University medal. During that time he studied piano with Pamela Page and viola with Elizabeth Morgan. In 1980, he won the Commonwealth Finals of the Australian Broadcasting Commission's Instrumental and Vocal Competition in the keyboard division. Also he was the Principal viola with the Queensland Youth Orchestra that year when it toured Europe and, in the following year, was a full-time member of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. Later in 1981 he took up a Commonwealth Scholarship to study at New College, Oxford and graduated with a M.Phil in Music in 1983. He remained in England till 1987 and continued to study piano with Peter Wallfisch. He received an ARCM in performance in 1986 and a D. Phil from Oxford University in 1989. He has been on the staff of the Queensland Conservatorium since 1987 where he teaches a range of subjects. He has performed in nationally and internationally both as soloist and with a variety of chamber ensembles. His recordings in collaboration with a variety of performers have been released by ABC Classics, Move Records, The Anthology of Australian Music on Disc, CPO and Contact.
